Romain Taupenot’s 2019 Charmes-Chambertin is an excellent wine in the making and not cut from the same powerful cloth as the Corton. The bouquet is bright, red fruity and complex, wafting from the glass in a blaze of cherries, blood orange, grilled meats, mustard seed, lavender, coffee and a touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with a sappy core of fruit, fine-grained tannins, excellent focus and a long, soil-driven and refined finish.
